Cryptic Diversity and Demographic Expansion of Plasmodium knowlesi Malaria Vectors in Malaysia

چکیده

Although Malaysia is considered free of human malaria, there has been a growing number Plasmodium knowlesi cases. This alarming trend highlighted the need for our understanding this parasite and its associated vectors, especially considering role genetic diversity in adaptation evolution among vectors endemic areas, which currently significant knowledge gap their fundamental biology. Thus, study aimed to investigate Anopheles balabacensis, cracens, introlatus, latens—the P. malaria Malaysia. Based on cytochrome c oxidase 1 (CO1) internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) markers, genealogic networks An. latens showed separation haplotypes between Peninsular Borneo, forming two distinct clusters. Additionally, distances these clusters were high (2.3–5.2% CO1) (2.3–4.7% ITS2), indicating likely presence species or cryptic within latens. In contrast, no observed implying lack pronounced differentiation populations. It worth noting that varying levels polymorphism across different subpopulations, highlighting some variation mosquito species. Nevertheless, further analyses revealed all four have undergone demographic expansion, suggesting population growth potential range expansion region.

Plasmodium knowlesi malaria in Malaysia.

Plasmodium knowlesi, a simian malaria parasite, is now recognised as the fifth cause of human malaria and can lead to fatal infections in humans. Knowlesi malaria cases are widely distributed in East and West Malaysia and account for more than 50% of admissions for malaria in certain hospitals in the state of Sarawak. This paper will begin with a description of the early studies on P. knowlesi,...

Plasmodium knowlesi Malaria in Children

Plasmodium knowlesi can cause severe malaria in adults; however, descriptions of clinical disease in children are lacking. We reviewed case records of children (age <15 years) with a malaria diagnosis at Kudat District Hospital, serving a largely deforested area of Sabah, Malaysia, during January-November 2009. Sixteen children with PCR-confirmed P. knowlesi monoinfection were compared with 14 ...

Plasmodium knowlesi malaria during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND Plasmodium knowlesi is the commonest cause of malaria in Malaysia, but little is known regarding infection during pregnancy. METHODS To investigate comparative risk and consequences of knowlesi malaria during pregnancy, we reviewed (1) Sabah Health Department malaria-notification records created during 2012-2013, (2) prospectively collected data from all females with polymerase cha...

Plasmodium knowlesi in humans: a review on the role of its vectors in Malaysia.

Plasmodium knowlesi in humans is life threatening, is on the increase and has been reported from most states in Malaysia. Anopheles latens and Anopheles cracens have been incriminated as vectors. Malaria is now a zoonoses and is occurring in malaria free areas of Malaysia. It is also a threat to eco-tourism. The importance of the vectors and possible control measures is reviewed here.

The Treatment of Plasmodium knowlesi Malaria.

Plasmodium knowlesi occurs across Southeast Asia and is the most common cause of malaria in Malaysia. High parasitaemias can develop rapidly, and the risk of severe disease in adults is at least as high as in falciparum malaria. Prompt initiation of effective treatment is therefore essential. Intravenous artesunate is highly effective in severe knowlesi malaria and in those with moderately high...
